The Computer Specialist Certificate provides students with a strong foundation in everyday computer systems, software applications, and technical support. This pathway is ideal for students interested in understanding how computers operate, how to support users, and how technology is applied in business and organizational environments.
Students develop practical skills in operating systems, microcomputer applications, basic
programming, data communications, as well as troubleshooting techniques. The program
emphasizes hands on learning and prepares students for entry level roles such as help desk technician, I.T. support specialist, or IT Administrator.
As a first year pathway within the Computer Technology program, the Computer Specialist Certificate builds core technical confidence and broad IT knowledge. All coursework applies directly toward the Associate of Applied Science in Computer Technology, allowing students to transition smoothly into more advanced topics and career specializations during their second
year.
A grade of “C” or higher is required in all CMSP coursework for successful certificate
completion and degree progression.
OLD: The Computer Specialist Certificate program is designed to provide entry-level skills necessary for careers in the field of microcomputer operations and support services. The program is offered for individuals seeking to develop or broaden their knowledge of microcomputer software applications, operating systems, programming, data and Internet communications. Students may apply courses in the Computer Specialist Certificate toward the Associate Degree in Applied Science with a major in Computer Technology.
The Computer Specialist Certificate Program requires at least a grade of “C” in all of the courses offered within the CMSP curriculum for the grade to be counted toward graduation. Specifically, these include courses with the following prefixes: CPT and IST.
